Got a house through Tysons in Nairobi last year. Our bad experience started from the very beginning – on the day we were supposed to move in, we couldn’t enter the house although we agreed with our agent on a date, so we had to wait for somebody to bring a key. Finally, the key was left at the security gate and there was nobody to take us to the house and tell us how things work (paying bills, water system etc.). When we finally entered, the house was completely dirty, there was trash all over the garden, the water system was off (and as foreigners, we didn't know what to do about it and we expected the agency would give us some info at the beginning)… In one of the rooms the floor and the wall were damaged (which looked like there was humidity that caused it). After reporting it twice and telling that it started affecting neighbors, nobody ever did anything about it. Two weeks later, our agent came to give us a hand over form in which we stated things that were damaged in the house (including the floor!). This form seems to be completely purposeless because of what happened later: after moving out and receiving our deposit money back, we noticed that there was around 100 missing, to which our agent said it was due to transaction costs. Since we were surprised that transaction costs would be so high, we filed a complaint to the agency and insisted on getting the money transfer receipt (which we never received). After that our agent changed his story and said that 50 was deducted for transaction costs and the other 50 because of the damaged floor in the room! Naturally, this was unacceptable to us and we tried to communicate it with the agent and his supervisor, but they stopped responding to our emails, so we wrote to one of the Tysons’ directors who promised to examine our case and never got back to us (despite 3 follow up emails we sent). It seems that taking money behind people’s back, lying and ignoring their clients is what Tysons call “professional”!
