AYICC is an umbrella initiative of all youth organizations in Africa working on climate change. It was launched during the International Conference of Youth prior to the UNFCCC, COP 12 in 2006. Currently it has a membership of over 200 youth organizations from all over Africa. It comprises and continues to welcome of all youth organizations who consent with the shared AYICC vision of ‘An African continent with an empowered and united youth movement, proactively involved in the decision making process and the adoption of sustainable options towards a better climate and social equity’. In 2009, AYICC worked with African and International youth in preparations for the COP 15- UNFCCC in Denmark. A team of over 60 African youth from 30 countries attended to represent the voices of the African youth who in the midst of these crisis, have been left languishing in problems that neither them, nor their past generation caused, but generations after them, will pay dearly for. African youth joined the Climate Negotiations with a Demand for Climate Justice and consideration of the Survival of the 2050 generation. In 2010 and beyond AYICC is reaching out to more African youth and continues to engage the governments the CSOs and the local communities in real work on ground to save Mama Africa. We have only one continent that we belong to; our world leaders failed in giving us the best solution to climate change and therefore its now in our hands to redeem ourselves from this predicament.
