The National Wetlands Information Centre at the National Museums of Kenya is a flagship output of a project on Wetland Biodiversity, Assessment, Mapping, Knowledge Sharing and Management for Upper Tana, Kenya. Kenya’s wetlands are diverse in type and distribution. They range from shallow lakes in the Great Rift Valley, edges of Lake Victoria, various swamps, plains and valley bottoms to the coastal wetlands including the mangroves swamps, sandy beaches, sea grass beds and coral reefs. While these crucial biodiversity sites have been assessed in different projects over time, a national wetlands information centre that documents research, dissemination, training and conservation of these sites has been lacking. Therefore, this Upper Tana biodiversity assessment and mapping undertaking, which is a Global Environment Facility (GEF) funded project implemented by International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), is an opportunity to establish such a center. This was made possible by collaboration between The Nature Conservancy-Nairobi Water Fund and the National Museums of Kenya.
