Diagnostic tests do exactly this, and are used in 70% of clinical decisions related to treatment. The problem is that developing countries struggle with numerous health challenges, including access to diagnostics. Africa has 24% of the world’s disease burden yet less than 1% of its health expenditure (WHO). Diagnostic and medical testing facilities are a particular problem. They are often limited and inaccessible to most patients, resulting in high mortality rates. Rural areas, where 60%+ of Africans live, in particular lack access to diagnostic facilities. As a result, samples (e.g. blood) must be transported to larger cities for analysis which is costly, time-consuming and impractical in emergency situations. Ilera overcomes this problem by de-centralising access to the most common diagnostic tests through its low cost, AI-powered microscope. This device is affordable to clinics in rural settings, and can easily be operated by basic health workers. How it works: - Patient visits a doctor in a rural health clinic - Sample is extracted from the patient (e.g. blood, urine) - Sample is digitised by Illera’s machine - AI models generate a report on the sample - A remote pathologist reviews the report and signs it off for approval - The doctor treating the patient receives the report within 10 minutes, and can advise the patient on the appropriate treatment The device is capable of analysing blood (haematology scans; approximately 20% of all blood tests conducted), urine, retinal scans, chest x-rays and semen. The device reduces the cost of each test by up to 1/10, improves the quality of results by removing variability, improves the turn-around time, and improves a doctor’s efficiency. The application for this product are vast and include (but not limited to): peri-urban/rural Africa with basic clinics but no pathologists on site, urgent cases which can’t wait for the patient to be transported to hospital, complex pathology which can’t be done on site or in the area/city/country.
