As an art lover, anytime I enter a country I look out for their art centre, craft market or flea market, Kenya wasn’t an exception. The first thing I asked for was please “where is your art & craft market?” I need to brand myself with the beautiful colour blend of their National flag and craft. On my way from the giraffe centre, I decided to stopover at the Love Birds Community Gift Shop.
The shop welcomes you with an array of Maasai Shuka fabric. Maasai Shuka is a traditional fabric originating in East Africa, worn by the Maasai people, mainly from Kenya and Tanzania. Maasai Shuka is a cotton plaid fabric, in the form of a blanket, of bright red and blue colors. Masai men and women wear the traditional Shuka outfit. It is known to be durable, solid, and thick. The fabric protects them against time and terrain of the savannah.
Mostly these fabric comes in red and blue but it has evolved over the years, lots of colours have been added to it; orange, yellow, green, black etc
The atmosphere screamed art and craft, this is one of the favourite spot for tourist to get paintings, sculptures, wood work, iron work, crafts, wooden spoons, plates, fork, t-shirts, African print, slippers, art, pottery etc at a very cheap price, a lot of merchant that sells in the city come to buy form them in wholesale.
It is a long roll of shops, once you enter, it has the feel of a flea market, you can walk from point A to point B with a lot to stare at that you get amazed at their creativity and finesse. The owners of the shops are very friendly and courteous.
Whatever you are looking for, just find your way here BUT BE VERY CAREFUL, DON’T USE YOUR CREDIT CARD AND PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR TRANSCATION COS YOU CAN GET RIPPED OFF!
