Ol Lerai is a beautiful camping spot with 240 views. The site has 2 resident buffalos, great spotting for Ellie's at the river and stunning landscape views and occasionally a view of mount Kenya on a clear day to the left of the camp. We camped for 2 nights end of December 2020, the weather was hot at 30C during the day and 10C in the evening and a tad less the deeper into the night it got. The galaxy above is clearest after 2am and best views are 4am onwards. Insects were at a minimum at this time, and there were birds galore. Water was provided in a massive tank (which was leaking and reported) It is quite close to the Chimp Sanctuary as well as the Rhino Sanctuary. There is also a wonderful concentration of wildlife in the surrounding area. The camp area is open and therefore also has a feel of safety. The rangers we experienced in Sammy's team were great, informative and took our safety concerns seriously. One of the guards took us on a brief walking safari long the river to get a safe closer look at the Ellies.

This was the most 'into the wild' experience I've ever had.. the campsite we stayed on had no fences to keep wildlife from crossing your path. You can hire a man to keep watch over your camp at night but I would recommend doing that in advance seeing as they do run out of employees. We took a rav 4 around the national conservation and had no problems on the roads. If you want to fish at this location, I've heard you can catch bottom feeders like telapia and catfish.
